One of the benefits of the ESV Study Bible is the collection of noted theologians from around the world to be our guide. Each book of the Bible was assigned to a theologian who possesses expertise in a particular book.
Our guide through the book of Genesis is Dr. T. Desmond Alexander. Dr. Alexander is the Senior Lecturer in Biblical Studies and Director of Postgraduate Studies at Union Theological College in Belfast, Ireland.
As I was poking around the Internet to better understand who Dr. Alexander is, I found that he has written a broad-brush Biblical Theology entitled From Eden to the New Jerusalem. I have been looking for just such a text, and now await its arrival from Amazon.
As Dr. Desmond Alexander points out in his Introduction to Genesis, it is most helpful, for our desire to understand God's thoughts, to understand not only the content, but also the context. As this graphic points out, Genesis is one of the critical bookends in God's plan of Creation, Redemption, and ultimately a New Creation.
The book of Genesis is an amazing narrative, and I am looking forward to my second journey through the book.
Who knows, perhaps Dr. Alexander will poke his head in our study and say Hi!
