One of the greatest things I have learned, in my three years on God's threshing floor, is this: above all things, my Creator desires that I know Him. Not to know of Him, but to actually know, and have a relationship with Him.
Here it from the last sentence, in the journal of the world's wisest man (King Solomon): The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14)
Here it from the mouth of God, through Jeremiah: Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.” (Jeremiah 9:23-24)
Here is Dr. Bruce Ware, speaking in chapel at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Three steps to grow in the knowledge of God:
- Examine your own heart. Ask "What in this world do I consider of great value, and why?" Dig deep! Find those things that might possess greater value to you than God. Repent. Turn.
- Meditate on the majesty, the character, and the works of God. What might I find, in God, that should be considered of greatest value, and why?
- Repeat steps #1, and #2, over, and over, and over, and over, and over, all your life. We are prone to wander.
