"The Passion, (detail)", c 1524-1525, by Hans the Younger Holbein.
This post is part of a 13 day series, joining other Christian bloggers from around the world, reading together Frederick S. Leahy's classic, "The Cross He Bore".
Matthew 26:65-66 - Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your judgment?” They answered, “He deserves death.”
There it is...the Christ...sentenced to death. The clay, issuing judgment on the Potter.
It seems to me that the most important thing to remember, in this whole scene, is that the clay is not in control. The whole scene was predestined, before eternity.
The Jews didn't kill Christ. All of humanity, were not ultimately responsible for the death of Christ.
They were the means.
God, in a plan that I can't completely wrap my mind around, determined, before creation, that man would fall, that man would kill his on only begotten Son, and that those who place their faith in this Christ, would spend eternity with him.
Who would make up such a plan? Who can comprehend such a plan?
As I continue my journey of discovery, in God's word, I am constantly perplexed, and at wonder.
Make no mistake, Caiaphas did not sentence the Christ to death...Holy God did.
From Frederick Leahy: "Thus predestination and human responsibility meet as Christ is condemned."
