Have you ever awakened in the night to find yourself haunted by some sin that you committed in the past? Does the video tape of this sin play over and over in your head? How on earth do you permanently turn this blasted tape off?
King David found himself in just such a way. He summoned a married woman, named Bathsheba, to his palace and committed adultery with her. To make matters worse, Bathsheba found herself pregnant with David's child.
In fear, David calls home her husband, Uriah, from the battle front, hoping that he would have sex with his wife (Bathsheba) and think that the child, growing in Bathsheba's womb, was his. Uriah foils this plan because his conscience would not allow him to enjoy sex with his wife while his soldiers were dying on the battle front.
David, realizing that his plan wasn't working, launched a new plan to have Uriah murdered so that he could marry Bathsheba and claim the child as his own.
To David's unspeakable horror, Nathan the prophet is sent by God to confront David's evil deeds of adultery, murder, deceit and the ultimate death of the child.
Imagine the video tape of events that were replaying in David's mind each night!
The details of these events are unfolded for us in II Samuel 11 - 12:15 and David's consequent passionate and soulful undoing are recorded for us in Psalm 51.
So here we are, David is utterly broken before God. He was the author of unspeakable sin. How could he continue? How could God even think of forgiving him?
