Judges 19:1a - In those days, when there was no king in Israel...
The 19th chapter of Judges is one of the most shocking I have come across.
It seems that a Levite, and his concubine, were staying as a guest in a certain man's home. Outside, the men of the town desired that the man throw the guest outside, so that they might have sex with him.
The man refuses, and in a desperate move to save his own life, the guest throws his concubine out to the mob, where they gang rape her all night long.
In the morning, she is found dead at the door, whereby the guest cuts her into 12 pieces, and mails a piece of her to each of the twelve tribes of Israel.
As a result, we see the first war between the tribes of Israel, 11 against the tribe of Benjamin.
The very last sentence in the book reads "In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes." (Judges 21:25)
This horrendous scene stands in stark contrast to the promise felt as Moses starred at the Promised Land. We have traveled, in the Book of Judges, over 400 years, and the apostasy is rampant, and many of their acts unspeakable.
There are a great many lessons to be learned from the book of Judges. The one that strikes me most is the sin that will develop, when man, in his fallen state, endures nothing but blessing.
Therefore, is it not possible that this recession (born out of greed, and sin), and many of man's inhumanities to man, serve to remind us of this lesson?
I truly don't understand how the Deist can believe that God doesn't intervene into history. Left to our own devises, would we not all be aligned with Satan himself?
