Book Review - Buy from Amazon --> A Tale of Three Kings - A Study in Brokenness, by Gene Edwards.
"God has a university. It's a small school. Few enroll; even fewer graduate. Very, very few indeed.
God has this school because he does not have broken men and women. Instead, he has several other types of people. He has people who claim to have God's authority...and don't -- people who claim to be broken...and aren't. And people who do have God's authority, but who are mad and unbroken. And he has, regretfully, a great mixture of everything in between. All of these he has in abundance, but broken men and women, hardly at all."
As I mentioned, in a recent post, God has been teaching me about brokenness.
It seems to me, that a good many people have the idea that this subject is to bring comfort when we are oppressed. I suppose there is a comfort. But not where we might think.
The premise of this book is that God greatly desires people who are completely broken. If there is comfort in this, it is only to be found in God's sovereignty, and his jealous desire for our complete faith in his Fatherly love.
God determined that David would be King. In preparing David for kingship, he completely crushed David for 10 years, with the mad man Saul hunting him down like a dog, to kill him! Every single ounce of self was stripped out from David. The only thing left was a complete and total dependence on God.
This can be a difficult subject to wrap your mind around, at first blush. It is also completely contrary to our "self-esteem" culture, and even worse, our "name it and claim it", and "prosperity gospel" churches.
The true path to heaven is a very narrow, and difficult path. God does not, in fact, want for us "our best life now"! We are sojourners on this earth and our best life awaits us in our heavenly inheritance.
This book was a quick and easy read. I recommend however, that you digest it slowly, as not to miss the incredible lessons learned from the lives of Saul, David, and Absalom.
If you truly desire a closer relationship with the only true holy God, then prepare yourself, and strap on a measure of brokenness. It will change your life.
I highly recommend this book, and your thoughtful meditation of it's pointings towards God's holy word.
